I know it was some time ago

that you first sent up that prayer

For a little child to hold so tight

and show how much you care,

God above heard your prayer

just like all the others,

He knew you'd give your care and love

like all the other Mothers.

He ordered Angels one by one

to bring your little treasure,

With voice so stern but filled with love

"this one must be made to measure"

So the Angels went from place to place

and searched in nook and cranny,

Not just to make you a Mum and Dad

but your parents

Grandad and Granny.

They searched beneath a moombeam

and they looked upon a star,

And they found your little Angel

 not so very far.

So they plucked this little cherub

from out his cosy nest

To send him down from heaven

to be with all the rest.

His face is like a moombeam

and his eyes sparkle like the dew,

His lips are like a rosebud

picked 'specially for you.

But then there was a problem

as he went through the golden gate.

The Lord God shouted out like thunder

 "stop that child, please wait"

"I'm afraid that this wont do,

it really isn't right,

This little boy is our loveliest star,

he's the one who shines so bright"

"He's the one who makes the birds sing,

gives the flowers their brightest hue"

"He's the child who's laughter fills the air

 and stops us feeling blue."

"What would we do in heaven

without his cheery face"

"Who will paint the fluffy clouds

to brighten up this place"

"His warmth is like the golden sun

and his smile it's brightest rays"

His laughter's like a tinkling bell

 which brightens all our days"

"So tell his Mum and Dad I'm sorry,

as I keep him in my care"

I know they've waited a long, long time

 but he's extremely rare"

"I've filled his heart with laughter

and his mind I've filled with peace"

I've showered him with blessings

which I pray will never cease"

"So when things are at their blackest

search the heavens for that star

And the brightest one you see at night

Shows your precious child isn't far

Your child knows you love him

and there's no doubt he loves you too"

"But his life is up in heaven,

so please, please don't feel blue"

God above will guide you

and keep you in his care

And the brightest star will shine so bright

to show your child is there.

I originally composed the first part of this poem for someone who adopted a baby - it has been changed and added to over the years in loving memory of two babies (grandchildren) who sadly weren't able to be with us.
